Why should I use Environ® products?

Daily treatment using the Environ® range will help reduce and delay the signs of photo-aging.

Aging is a chronic disease that needs daily treatment starting before the visible signs show. After all, prevention is better than cure. As we get older, more intensive treatment is required. How was Environ® developed?

Environ® was developed by a prominent plastic surgeon, Dr. Desmond Fernandes, in Cape Town, South Africa. He became very concerned about skin cancer in the early 1980s and started research that eventually led to the conception of the Environ® range of skin care products.

After much medical research and extensive trials, it was shown that vitamin A has a corrective effect on skin, smoothing and softening it, while at the same time protecting it from the effects of ultra-violet irradiation and free radicals.

Why is Vitamin A important?

Although some cosmetic houses were using very low doses of vitamin A in their skin care products in the 1980s, Environ® was the first product in the world to introduce vitamin A (the "skin vitamin") in high effective doses. The Original range established it as a leader in skin care. The most important activity of vitamin A is that it normalizes the skin. It promotes the production of healthy collagen and elastin and improves the natural moisturizing factors of the skin, leading to healthier, younger looking skin.

Vitamin A is an extremely important antioxidant that naturally resides in the skin as a protective layer. Just one strong exposure of ultraviolet rays from the sun or tanning bed can deplete the skin's vitamin A levels. After years of ultraviolet ray exposure, many people are severely depleted of Vitamin A and are left with dry, thin, brittle, and even cancer-prone skin. The introduction of Vitamin A into the formulation of skin care products heralded a new era in the treatment of sun-damaged skin.

Medical research and extensive trials have shown that vitamin A has a corrective effect on the skin, smoothing and softening it, whilst at the same time protecting it from the effects of ultra-violet irradiation and free radicals. Vitamin A helps to prevent and reverse established photo-ageing as much as possible, and to improve hydration.

Vitamin A will always be an essential nutrient that has to be replaced each day for a healthy, youthful appearance. The proper way to supply vitamin A to the skin is directly on the surface areas of skin that particularly need it. Oral supplementation of vitamin A is important, but can never be adequate enough to treat skin intensively.

What are the products Environ® carries?

Environ® has expanded their products into a full skin care range, including seven product categories and a total of more than forty products.

ORIGINAL RANGE :

Consists of light, non-greasy products containing vitamin A, a free radical scavenging system of beta-carotene, vitamins C and E, and provitamin B5. The strength of vitamin A increases through the range of Environ Original products. This will enable the skin to acclimate to the formula and to gain maximum long-term benefits. The Day Creams contain a sun protection factor (SPF4).

SEBU-ACTIVE RANGE :

Specifically intended for problem skin. Each product contains Australian tea tree oil for its antiseptic properties to help control bacteria and inflammation and most contain salicylic acid for its mild exfoliate properties. The range boasts a pre-cleanser, a cleansing gel, skin toner, moisturiser, and lotion to help control and prevent bacterial breakouts.

INTERACTIVE RANGE:

The range has been designed to work in conjunction or boost the effects with the other products. The function of the Interactive range is to prepare the skin for the application of the important active products, or to boost their effects. Products include Make-Up Remover, Cleansers, Moisturizers, Clay Masques and Hand & Nail Creams.

IONZYME® RANGE:

Environ® first launched the Ionzyme® C-Quence skin care products in 1997. It enriches the skin with an exciting combination of powerful antioxidants and vitamins, thereby introducing a new dimension to advanced skin care. This improved range is the most luxurious Environ® home treatment available. It will help speed up the restoration of the skin cells resulting in a more youthful and healthy complexion. No preservatives or sunscreens are included in this range. No expense has been spared in the research and production of these improved C-Quence Gels.

Each of these unique formulae is enriched with vitamin A in the form of Retinyl Acetate, a very active, oil soluble form of vitamin C and chirally correct vitamin E. They also contain a cocktail of Matrixyl® and Dermaxyl™ as well as three extremely powerful antioxidants, Lycopene (a tomato derivative), Green Tea and Rosemary extracts.

The C-Quence Gels are made from the finest, purest ingredients and are produced in four varying strengths. For the best long-term benefits, follow the sequence of these strengths. This will enable your skin to acclimate to the formulae to gain maximum long-term benefits and to avoid any potential skin reactions. The C-Quence Gels are not recommended for use on problematic skins.

ALPHA-HYDROXY RANGE :

The Alpha-Hydroxy range is based on gentle, non-toxic Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA) that assist in softening and smoothing the skin. The range also assists the natural exfoliating function, leading to a smoother skin with greater resilience and finer texture, whilst replenishing the skin's natural acidity.

Skin becomes accustomed to AHAs by gradually adapting from milder to higher concentrations. The Alpha Hydroxy Toners are an essential step in promoting the natural acid mantle of the skin and assisting the penetration of the Environ Original, Ionzyme or Alpha preparations. They remove residual cleanser and help to firm and refine the appearance of the skin.

They are specifically designed for congested, and mature, photo-aged skin. Not recommended for young healthy skin. Other than the Alpha Toners and the Alpha Day Lotion SPF15, all Alpha Hydroxy products should be used at night only. AHAs also help to replenish the skin's natural acidity, preventing a build-up of bacteria which can cause blemishes. They support cell regeneration. When using Alpha Hydroxy Acid products, even when the product is used at night only, use a sunscreen of at least SPF15 every day.

INTENSIVE RANGE :

Designed to provide the skin with specialized intense treatments. The products are intended for use by those who wish to obtain maximum benefit from vitamins and nutrients for specific problem areas.

Each product has special active ingredients that increase the rejuvenating effect on the skin, providing faster results. The range should be regarded as a supplement to the Original and Ionzyme© ranges.

SUN CARE RANGE :

A revolutionary sunscreen containing sun filters and sun reflectants that give an SPF 16 to provide protection from both UVA and UVB irradiation. Also contains a free radical scavenging system consisting of antioxidant vitamins to combat the effects of the sun and pollution on the skin.

Highly recommended for all skin types and suitable for all ages, including babies. RAD does not contain vitamin A. Packaged in a 75ml Aluminium laminated tube that protects the active vitamins from light and air. Shelf life - Eighteen (18) months unopened. Should be used within 6-8 weeks after opening.

ROLL-CIT™ Collagen Channeling for Natural Collagen Induction Therapy

The Environ® Cosmetic Roll-Cit™ is the latest revolutionary design from Environ® in skin care treatments.

It is a world first and will dramatically increase the effectiveness of skin care products, allowing improved penetration of vitamins into the active layers of the skin.

The principle of the Cosmetic Roll-Cit™ is that the "micro-needles" puncture the horny layer of the epidermis, which is the main obstruction to penetration of active ingredients.

Once this layer has been breached, the active ingredients in the skin care products can reach into the depths of the skin about 10,000 times more effectively than by simply applying the products topically. The higher the levels of vitamin A and vitamin C that can penetrate into the lower layers of the epidermis, the more collagen can be made therefore allowing natural collagenesis to occur. Use of the Cosmetic ROLL-CIT™ will help restore skin tightness in the early stages of ageing, speed up the reduction of pigmented marks, thicken thin skin, smooth fine lines, soften scars, and reduce dilated blood vessels. The advantages of skin needling is that is not painful, it does not damage the skin, and it can be used on all areas of the skin or body, including very thin skin. It is however, not suitable for use on the following skin conditions: Active acne, Eczema, Rosacea, Psoriasis, severe solar keratosis, and raised moles or warts. The treatment time can range from 5-20 minutes depending on the speed, accuracy, and density. It should be repeated at home between two to seven times a week. The more frequent the treatment, the better the result. It is a cost-effective instrument can last you several years.

Who can use Environ®?

Environ® works for everyone, whatever their skin type. It has been found that once clients start using the Environ® range, they never leave it. It is recommended by many plastic surgeons, dermatologists, and BUPA hospitals.

Backed by extensive scientific research, the Environ® method has been shown to reverse much of the structural derangement that occurs with age and years of ultraviolet ray exposure. After treatment, the skin is renewed with many of the visual characteristics of youthful skin. Further, it provides the skin with Vitamin A, an important element in the prevention of skin cancer.

What is a good age to begin using Environ® products?

Ideally, skin care should start as early as possible (four to five years old is not too soon to start in fact!) because by that time already, sun damage can be detected in Type I and II skins. Most young people in their 20s mistakenly believe that they are too young to use any cosmetic moisturizing cream and they ignore the warnings and sunbathe!

The truth is that 80 percent of photo-damage is done by the age of 18. Darker Mediterranean types can tan easily and relatively safely but definitely get sun damage. Even black skins are damaged by the sun and become blotchy with irregular pigmentation.

Look carefully at the skin of the average person in their early 20s and you will see evidence of sun damage, the beginnings of fine wrinkles around the eyes, freckles, and clumping of the skin pigment when viewed with a magnifying glass under ultra-violet light. Eventually damaged cells become abnormal or even pre-cancerous.

Here are some other FAQ's:

Is the makeup safe for all skin types?

Yes. Its non-sensitizing and sun protective ingredients make it especially appropriate for allergy-prone, compromised, or healing skin.

Is it all right to use it on acne-prone skin?

Yes. It is completely non-comedogenic and allows the skin to breathe and function normally. It also easily covers the redness common with eruptions. Many aestheticians say that they have seen an improvement in the skins of their clients since they have been using Iredale cosmetics.

May I use JI with Retin-A®?

Yes. It can be used with any skin care regimen. The SPF the minerals provide is especially important while using Retin-A®.

Is it necessary to wear additional sunscreens when using the minerals?

No. You may if you wish. We always believe that you can't wear too much protection in the sun. However, be careful of comedogenic or sensitivity reactions to some chemical sunscreens. Because our minerals provide a physical sunscreen, there are no chemicals to be absorbed by the skin that could cause reactions.

How do you increase the sun protection?

Our makeup has a certified SPF 17 for the pressed bases and SPF 20 for the loose. This was achieved by an FDA approved laboratory using one light coverage on human subjects. The light coverage was applied with a brush just the way you would use it if you were applying a normal makeup. When the tester applied a second layer, the protection increased. The increase in protection will, of course, depend on how much you apply.

How soon can the makeup be applied after laser, peels, etc?

The minerals can be applied immediately after a microdermabrasion or a peel. They will not only cover the redness but the titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are anti-inflammatories, which will help to calm the erythema.

Application after laser resurfacing must depend on the physician's permission. Many factors are involved including the laser that was used and how deeply it was used. Almost always, makeup can be applied as soon as the skin has re-epithelized.

One of the important things to remember is that it is essential for healing skin to be protected by the sun. Minerals provide this as well as coverage and soothing properties.

What are the best colors for camouflaging redness?

Definitely not green! Green works fine for artists working on canvass when they want to neutralize red, but it doesn't work on the human skin. It leaves a gray, ghost-like pall, which is very unattractive.

Our yellow bases do an excellent job of concealing redness. Our most popular yellow base is Warm Sienna, and that is our most popular color for camouflaging erythema. Other popular yellow bases are: Warm Silk, Amber, and Golden Glow.

Is the loose or pressed powder better for post-laser?

Either will cover the erythema and give the necessary sun protection. You might want to bear in mind, however, that the new skin after laser is extremely sensitive and the fewer ingredients you have to worry about, the better. The loose contains less than the pressed. Our advice on lasered skin is to keep it as simple as possible.

Will the minerals cover bruising or birthmarks?

Yes. However the shadow of some dark bruising may show through. Try the peach Circle/Delete or CoverCare to camouflage anything that the powders won't.

What does a water- and perspiration-proof rating mean?

Under the new FDA monograph, no manufacturer is now allowed to claim a "water proof" rating. The highest nomenclature that is allowed is "very water resistant." This is a rating allowed by the FDA when a product has successfully completed its criteria for underwater testing. It requires that product be placed on a human subject and immersed in moving water for 80 minutes. The SPF is then tested.

In the case of our makeup, it maintained its SPF and, therefore, acquired a "very water resistant" rating.

It applies to our mineral powders this way. If you are perspiring heavily or swimming or you've been caught in the rain, don't wipe your face with the towel -just pat it. You may remove a small amount of the makeup, but the majority will stay on the skin.

Dancers have found Jane Iredale to be much easier than usual makeup because they don't have to keep reapplying it during performance. If you are exercising in the sun, it would be wise to brush on another layer of minerals after you've dried you face.

Does Jane Iredale work on older or aging skin?

Yes. Because this is a light-reflective cosmetic, it obscures fine lines and wrinkles and gives a healthy glow to the skin, making it look younger. Matte makeup absorbs light and allows the eye to see "into" the skin. On a very lined skin, it is helpful to spritz with water (preferably our D2O Heavy Water which resists evaporation) after applying the makeup. This softens lines and gives a dewy look.

Are the powders drying?

No, quite the reverse. Powders have a bad name because they usually contain talc. Our minerals actually trap moisture between the skin and the crystal layer.

What moisturizer is best used with the powders?

Your favorite. Just wait for it to be absorbed so that you have a smooth canvas to work on. If you don't, the powders will grab unevenly.

What are the coloring agents in your cosmetics?

Jane is colored mostly with iron oxides and carmine. We may use manganese violet in some of our pink loose base powders. We use ultramarines, chromium oxide green, and chromium hydroxide green in our blue and green eye shadows. We never use FD&C (petroleum-derived) dyes.

Is it okay to put your blush on eyes?

Yes, because we don't use FD&C dyes in our blushes. FD&C dyes are not allowed for use around the eye area. Some red dyes (like Red #40) are extremely comedogenic. Break-outs in the cheek area could be related to this.

Do the eye shadows crease?

Not so far!

Are the lip and eye pencils interchangeable?

Absolutely. They all have the same ingredients.

Is the makeup easy to apply?

Extremely! The problem that first-time wearers commonly encounter is that they apply too much. Because they are used to using makeup that has large amounts of filler and no "pay-off," they use the same techniques when applying jane iredale. With minerals, less is more.

How long does it take to apply a full makeup?

Ten to fifteen minutes and it will last all day with no need for touch-ups!

May I apply it over my regular foundation?

Yes, but we don't know why you would want to. Try it and see the amount of coverage you get just with the minerals. You'll be amazed! Guess why it's called Amazing Base?!

What cleanser should I use?

Your favorite. The minerals can be removed with any cleanser. They won't, however, come off with plain water.

Do men use the cosmetics?

Yes. Because the minerals are undetectable, they feel very comfortable wearing them. In fact, newscasters are now using the powders on high definition television because their old makeup was obvious to the television cameras.

A 12-hour cancellation or change notice is required to avoid being charged 50% of the fee for the scheduled appointment. A charge of 100% will apply to missed appointments.
