Accent

Accent is a painless, non-surgical treatment for cellulite reduction and skin tightening of the face and body.

Using bipolar radio frequency technology, the Accent system allows deep, controlled penetration into the tissue to eliminate fat deposits non-invasively.

This treatment is ideal for:

  • Face and Neck Remodelling
  • Tightening and lifting flaccid areas of the face
  • Reducing wrinkles
  • Increasing luminosity of the skin
  • Body remodeling
  • Tightening areas of loose skin on the body
  • Cellulite on the arms, abdomen, buttocks, thighs

Do I require an initial consultation?

You will be required to see Dr. Viljoen for an initial consultation whereby your full medical history will be discussed and the efficacy of the treatment and realistic expectations explained to you.

How does the treatment work?

Radiofrequency has been used for over three years in facial skin remodeling. The heat produced by the system causes instant tightening of collagen and increases collagen production in the dermis.

The effect is to tighten and rejuvenate the skin in the treated area.

With regards to the body treatment, thermal tightening also takes place with increased local blood circulation, promotes fibrous tissue breakdown, drainage of fatty deposits into the lymphatic system and disintegration of fat cells.

The radiofrequency is applied through a hand-piece in a rapid, uninterrupted circular movement onto the surface of the skin.

How long does the treatment take and how many sessions will I require?

Your first treatment will take anywhere from 30 min-2 hours, depending how many areas are being treated. This allows for before photographs to be taken.

For facial remodelling, a course of 2 - 4 sessions is usually required at 4 week intervals. Body treatments usually require a course of 6 - 8 treatments at 7 day intervals. In the case of stubborn cellulite however, treatment can be applied more frequently.

Contra-indications to treatment:

  • Pacemakers
  • Metal plates or pins in the treatment area
  • Severe heart disease
  • Diseases of the connective and muscular tissue
  • Pregnancy and breast feeding
  • Permanent implants e.g. bioalcamid

Is the treatment painful?

Tolerance to the treatment is very good and there is no need for the use of topical anaesthetic creams beforehand. Patients will generally experience a warm sensation on the surface of the skin as heat builds up, however, continuous contact cooling provides additional patient comfort and epidermal protection.

Are there any side effects?

The side effects observed have been slight discomfort which is nonetheless very well tolerated, edema (swelling) and erythema (redness) which disappears in a couple hours. These side effects apply to both facial and body treatments.

VISIA™ Skin Analysis

What is a VISIA™ Skin Analysis?

The VISIA™ Skin Analysis system is a fantastic tool to show you the progress in your treatments as well as identify problems not always visible to the naked eye.

VISIA™ can easily demonstrate actual skin conditions with VISIA™ measurements for spots (pigmentation), pores, wrinkles, evenness (colour variation in skin tone), porphyrins (evidence of bacteria lodged in pores, which can lead to acne), and UV spots (characteristic of photodamage due to overexposure to sun).

In addition, the VISIA™ system compares your skin to more than 3500 other people around the world who are in the same age and gender bracket, giving you an indication as to the condition of your skin.

The VISIA™ system allows us to pinpoint areas that may require treatment as well as give you the opportunity to chart your progress. In many cases our clients have just changed their skin care routines and have noticed measurable changes in their skin.

At Hummingbird, we recommend that a Digital Skin Analysis be performed during your initial one-on-one Skin Evaluation, as the results of the analysis provide the framework for creating a personalized facial rejuvenation programs that are designed to obtain optimal improvement in your skin color and texture.

In some cases, an additional analysis may be performed following a recommended treatment program.

How long does it take to perform a VISIA™ Digital Skin Analysis?

We usually schedule thirty minutes for a VISIA™ Digital Skin Analysis during a one-on-one skin evaluation. During the appointment, the medical esthetician (or Dr. Viljoen) will examine your complexion, discuss how you'd like to improve your skin, perform the Digital Skin Analysis, discuss product and treatment recommendations based on the results, and also address how you can improve your complexion through nutrition.

How often do I need to have a VISIA™ Digital Skin Analysis?

We will take a picture when you come for your initial consultation and a 6 week follow-up when you are using product so we can show the progress you've made. Also, before and after any procedure you have done, we will do a picture so we can show you the results.

Will I experience any discomfort during the session?

No. There is no discomfort involved in the VISIA™ Digital Skin Analysis.

Is there a minimum age recommendation for a VISIA™ session?

No. A VISIA™ Digital Skin Analysis can be done at any age. It is typically done when a skin health issue needs to be addressed with a facial rejuvenation program or a preventative program.

What is the cost of a Digital Skin Analysis?

To encourage as many individuals as possible to undergo this simple process, this analysis is complimentary which includes a one-on-one skin evaluation with an experienced medical esthetician (or doctor).

BLU-U® Blue Light Treatment

What is BLU-U®? How does it work?

The Blue Light Treatment offers effective, non-invasive, and pain-free treatment for moderate acne vulgaris, a condition affecting millions of adults, teens, and children.

The BLU-U® is not a laser. It emits safe, cool, visible blue light to provide an effective solution for acne removal and it works with all skin types (I-VI) even with a suntan.

What happens during a treatment?

With BLU-U®, a typical treatment session requires approximately 15 minutes. Patients sit on a chair while the therapeutic light is applied; sometimes there is a slight warming sensation. Treatments are described as easy, even relaxing, but most importantly, safe and painless.

What are the features of BLU-U®?

  • New paradigm for acne treatment
  • High-intensity, narrow spectrum blue-violet light destroys P. acnes bacteria
  • Short treatment regimen: 8-10 treatments over 4-5 weeks to achieve impressive results
  • No side effects, no pain, no downtime

How many treatments are required?

The doctor develops treatment plans based on individual patient needs. Typically, BLU-U® treatments are given twice a week for four weeks. It is important to keep treatment appointments recommended by the doctor in order to see maximum results.

For optimum results, a maintenance treatment session once a month is recommended after completion of the initial series.

How effective is BLU-U®?

The BLU-U® system effectively clears 70%-90% of moderate, inflammatory acne in four weeks. Results are especially impressive when compared with conventional treatments, such as topical creams and oral antibiotics.

Will skin be blemish-free at the end of the BLU-U® Treatments?

Though the inflammation will be gone for a majority of patients, some may experience residual redness where the inflamed blemish was located. The redness will dissipate over time.

Are the results permanent?

BLU-U® treatments usually help control acne breakouts for four to eight months; after that, occasional touch ups may be necessary.

Is BLU-U® safe? Are there any side effects?

BLU-U® is one of the safest acne treatments available. The system's blue-violet light penetrates just deep enough into the tissue to reach the acne target, without adversely affecting surrounding skin. BLU-U® has no known side effects.

Who can be treated with BLU-U®?

Most people can benefit from treatment. BLU-U® has proven to be very effective on mild to moderate, inflammatory acne. Pregnant women and people with photosensitivities should consult with Dr. Viljoen.

Do patients need to prepare their skin before coming in for a BLU-U® treatment?

Yes. The affected area should be washed with a mild acne cleanser, then rinsed with water and dried. Women should remove makeup before treatment sessions and should only wear oil-free make-up between appointments. Make-up can be re-applied immediately after a treatment session has been concluded.

What type of skincare is needed between BLU-U® treatments?

Patients should consult with their physicians regarding the daily use of a non-irritating, anti-acne cleanser such as salicylic acid. Patients should avoid touching or picking blemishes at all times. The use of salicylic acid enhances the effectiveness during and after treatments.

Are BLU-U® treatments FDA-cleared?

Yes. The BLU-U® system is one of the first devices to receive FDA clearance to market for the safe and effective treatment of moderate inflammatory acne. After eight, regularly spaced treatments, patients show significant improvement with no side effects noted.

Is there any downtime after a treatment?

Once the treatment session is over, patients can immediately return to their daily routine. This means no downtime or inconvenience, especially important factors for active teens and young adults

What if I have more serious acne?

One of our most popular procedures at Hummingbird involves combining Levulan, IPL, and BLU-U® to receive Photodynamic Therapy. It treats serious acne as well as sun damage. You will usually need about 2-3 treatments.

BOTOX® Cosmetic

Many people wish to look younger but are not ready for a surgical procedure like a facelift, nor do they even require extensive surgery. Fortunately, there are ways to reverse the inevitable signs of aging without surgery or a long recovery period. These small steps can include BOTOX® Cosmetic.

What is BOTOX® Cosmetic?

The cosmetic form of BOTOX® (trade name for botulinum purified neurotoxin complex), the most popular non-surgical injection cosmetic treatment in North America, temporarily reduces or eliminates frown lines, forehead creases, crow's feet near the eyes, and thick bands in the neck. By temporarily blocking the nerve impulses, the muscles that cause wrinkles relax, giving the skin a smoother, more refreshed appearance.

What are the benefits?

  • a trusted therapeutic choice used by millions
  • has been used safely and successfully for wrinkle therapy for over 18 years
  • no downtime
  • it is a purified protein
  • short appointment time
  • allows for natural movement
  • results last three to four months

How does BOTOX® Cosmetic work?

Used in a medical setting as an injectable form of sterile, purified protein, small doses of BOTOX® Cosmetic block the release of a chemical called acetylcholine by nerve cells that signal muscle contraction.

By selectively interfering with the underlying muscles' ability to contract, existing expression lines are smoothed out and, in most cases, are nearly invisible in a week.

What should I expect?

One 10 minute treatment — a few tiny injections — blocks the nerve impulses and relaxes the muscles. As the muscle relaxes, the dynamic wrinkle overlying the muscle is smoothed away.

Since the treatment only relaxes the muscle beneath the line at the injection site, it has no effect on other elements of facial expression. It also has no effect on the sensory nerves, allowing for normal feeling in the treated areas.

What happens after a BOTOX® Cosmetic injection?

After BOTOX® Cosmetic is injected into the targeted muscle, the weakening effect gradually begins over 3-5 days, and is not complete for two weeks. Therefore, optimal results are not seen until then. The effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic usually last three to four months, at which time another injection is required. After several treatments, the effects often begin to last longer. Repeated use is truly anti-aging!

Are there any side effects with BOTOX® treatments?

BOTOX® Cosmetic has been used safely by millions for over 18 years. There is no permanent side effect known with BOTOX® therapy for facial wrinkles. However, there are several temporary side effects which can occur including:

  • Bruising and pain at the site of the BOTOX® injection. A tiny needle is used to minimize the discomfort, and this can be lessened even more by the use of a topical anesthetic cream prior to treatment.
  • Eyebrow or eyelid droop: This is seen in 1-2% of patients receiving BOTOX® therapy. It usually only lasts 2-4 weeks and is mild.

What areas are commonly treated with BOTOX® Cosmetic on the face and neck?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is most commonly used for the glabella frown lines (those deep creases between the eyebrows); forehead wrinkles, and crows feet (wrinkles on the lateral aspect of the eyes). BOTOX® treatments can be used to lessen upper lip wrinkles, mouth frown, and the appearance of irregular dimpled skin on the chin. It is often used to treat "turkey neck" bands or "necklace lines" that appear on the neck with age.

BOTOX® Cosmetic is not used to treat smile lines which are usually filled with Juvedérm® to create a very pleasing effect, while preserving the natural smile muscle dynamics.

What other areas can be treated with BOTOX® Cosmetic?

In recent studies, BOTOX® Cosmetic has been shown to be effective in decreasing sweating of the armpits, hands, and feet. BOTOX® treatments control hyperhydrosis by blocking the release of the chemical responsible for stimulating the sweat glands --acetylcholine. BOTOX® Cosmetic is also used to treat tension headaches and migraines. Doctors are also now beginning to use BOTOX® injections to treat spasmodic low back pain and neck pain. Many extended health care plans will pay for BOTOX® Cosmetic for therapeutic use. In cases such as this, the only cost to you is the injection fee. We will be happy to answer your fee related questions about the therapeutic use of BOTOX® Cosmetic .

Is treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic painful?

Discomfort is usually minimal and brief. Prior to injecting, your physician may choose to numb the area with a cold pack or anesthetic cream. The entire procedure takes approximately 10 minutes. Many people return directly to work or normal activity following BOTOX® treatment.

What are the MISCONCEPTIONS of BOTOX® Cosmetic?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is not magic. It is medicine, the result of years of careful research and testing. It is the only one of its type with over 10 years of success in treating patients with a variety of conditions. With dosing specific to treat frown lines, this same product is now available as BOTOX® Cosmetic .

BOTOX® treatment will not radically change your appearance or make you look like you've had "work done." It will not make you look 20 years younger. Because it's highly localized and administered intramuscularly, its effects are usually confined to the region of injection, and BOTOX® Cosmetic does not remain in your body indefinitely.

The muscle activity that causes frown lines between the brows is simply reduced, so you can still frown or look surprised without the wrinkles and creases between your brows.

Contour Threads™

Have you ever lifted the skin on your face and wished it stayed there? Now with the new Contour ThreadLift™, it could happen in our office, without having to go to the operating room, and with a quick recovery! These new threads allow the surgeon to lift the drooping tissues on the face and neck and give a fresh, rejuvenated look without having an invasive facelift.

As the aging process begins, the skin's connective tissue thins and collagen and elastic fibers begin to break down. As a result, these changes in underlying support structures appear as sagging, deep creases, folds, and wrinkles in the skin as early as your thirties. Now there is a simple new technique that makes it possible to rejuvenate and beautify your appearance. A lift procedure performed with Contour ThreadLift™ is a safe, conservative and effective one that offers subtle, natural looking results.

By gently, shifting sagging tissues in an upward direction, this technique allows the surgeon to produce a relaxed, fresh appearance while preserving and enhancing the natural contours of your face. This procedure does not replace a conventional face-lift; rather it offers patients an innovative, minimally invasive approach with immediate results.

What is a Contour ThreadLift™?

A Contour ThreadLift™ with patented Contour Threads™ is a minimally invasive, safe and effective non-surgical procedure that offers a subtle, natural-looking facelift-like result.

How is it performed?

A Contour ThreadLift™ utilizes tiny surgical sutures to lift and support the droopy areas of the brow, cheeks, face and neck. Contour Threads™ have tiny, teeth-like (barb-like) cogs that will grasp on to and lift the soft tissues. The threads are inserted in precise locations using a long needle, and once inserted under the skin, they open in an umbrella like fashion to form a support structure that gently lifts and repositions the tissues into a more vertical and youthful position.

With the lift effect secured, the needle is removed, the end of the thread is cut and knotted, allowing it to retract deep under the skin where it cannot be felt or seen. The non-absorbable threads stay within the deep tissues and provide support.

What are "barbed" sutures?

Unlike conventional sutures which are smooth, patented Contour Threads™ have tiny teeth-like barbs or cogs that are spaced evenly apart. Once inserted under the skin, they are fixated with tension that creates a suspension effect that gently lifts sagging tissues.

What do the threads look like?

Unlike other thread products, Contour Threads™ are clear so they are not visible under fair or thin skin.

How do they work?

Due to the unique design of the cogs of Contour Threads™, the surrounding tissues act to hold the threads in place without the need for visible scars.

Dr. Viljoen makes a tiny incision behind the hairline and the threads are advanced along the previously marked contours so they create a firm hold on the underlying tissues without causing additional trauma.

The cogs do the work of holding, by being fixated to tissue as they are softly contoured into place. Once in position, your body generates new collagen bundles that surround each thread to maintain the lifting effect.

Does it hurt?

Pain and discomfort are very minimal with this technique and most patients can take only Tylenol for pain relief. In most cases, ice compresses are recommended for the first 24-48 hours.

Is it safe?

When performed by a certified physician with experience, the procedure is very safe. The risks and complications are uncommon and usually easily correctable. The actual sutures are made from polypropylene, which is a material that has been used in brain, heart and abdominal surgery for many years.

Since a Contour Threadlift™ is performed under local anesthesia, there are none of the risks associated with general anesthesia.

What kind of care is required after the procedure?

Following a Contour ThreadLift™ procedure, there are some practical instructions and care that must be followed to avoid traumatizing or dislodging the threads from their supportive locations in the deep fat of the face and neck. Some of these instructions include avoidance of forceful facial rubbing or trauma, sleeping on your back, minimal facial animations, putting pressure on the face, and avoidance of excessive mouth opening. After 3 weeks, there are no more restrictions.

When can I return to work and activities?

Depending upon your job and your tolerance for some minor bruising and swelling, you may be able to return to work in 2-3 days following the procedure. Most patients look good in makeup after one week.

How many treatments will I need?

Usually only one procedure is needed to achieve the desired lifting effect.

How long do the results last?

Duration varies depending on the age of the patient at the time of the procedure, the degree of sagging, and the number of threads used. Additional threads may be added as needed. The lift effect of the Contour ThreadLift™ can last 3-5 years in some cases.

What are the possible side effects?

The Contour Threadlift™ is a simple procedure to perform. Complications are rare and will be less likely with an experienced, fully trained surgeon.

Can this procedure be combined with other cosmetic procedures?

The Contour Threadlift™ is a stand alone procedure. However, it is not uncommon to have this procedure combined with botulinum toxin to reduce facial muscle activity, dermal fillers to enhance volume, or peels and laser therapy to improve skin texture. Liposuction of the neck and jowls and chin augmentation are some of the other procedures that can be done in conjunction with a Contour Threadlift™ procedure.

Are the threads permanent?

Contour Threads™ are non-absorbable, and they will not dissolve over time.

What is the difference between Contour Threads™ and other threads?

Contour Threads™ are the first non-absorbable barbed sutures cleared for marketing by the FDA. They are Anchored or Fixated to stationary fascia or tissue points. Other barbed sutures "float" in tissue and are inserted using a hollow cannula. Contour Threads are made of "Clear" Polypropylene and will not be visible in light or thin skinned patients.

What areas can be treated?

Contour Threads™ are used to:

  • Lift sagging eyebrows
  • Adjust asymmetric eyebrows
  • Reposition sagging cheeks
  • Lift drooping soft tissue of the mid and lower face and neck
  • Smooth out premature skin aging

What type of results will I see?

The effects are immediate. During the time of your consultation, your physician will demonstrate in the mirror, the relative amount of lift that the Contour Threadlift™ can achieve.

The procedure can also be combined with other techniques including blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), fat transfer, dermal fillers, botulinum toxin, and liposuction of the neck.

Do I need to have anesthesia?

In most cases, only local anesthesia is required. Your physician may also offer you the option of having light sedation or twilight anesthesia, depending on the extent of the Contour Threadlift™ you are having and the number of Contour Threads™ to be used in one stage. General anesthesia is not necessary for this technique.

How long does it take to perform?

The Contour Threadlift™ is most commonly performed under local anesthesia and the procedure usually takes less than 30 to 60 minutes to complete, depending on the number of threads used. Patients are able to go home soon after the procedure.

Will I still be able to have a conventional face lift or a brow lift at another time?

Developed by a board certified plastic surgeon, the unique design of Contour Threads™ allows a traditional facelift or browlift procedure when you are ready.

How much of a lifting effect can I expect?

The exact placement of the threads will vary from patient to patient. Results will vary depending on the extent of sagging and the degree of lifting desired, as well as the technique of the physician and the number of threads used in each area treated. Many patients can achieve a 50% improvement after one treatment session.

Who is a good candidate for a Contour ThreadLift™?

In general, the best candidates for a Contour ThreadLift™ include both women and men who want a more dramatic and long lasting effect than fillers and botulinum toxin or other treatments can provide, but do not want a full face lift or brow lift procedure.

How do I know if I am a good candidate?

Ideal candidates are women and men in their 30s through their 60s with moderate drooping of the soft tissues of the brow, face, and neck. Patients must have realistic expectations. They should not be too heavy or too thin, and should be medically well and not be taking blood thinning medication.

Who is NOT a good candidate?

  • Patients with a very thin, fragile, slack, aging skin
  • Patients who want a dramatic transformation
  • Very heavy, jowly faces
  • Too thin faces with very little facial fat

What fees are charged for a threadlift?

Fees for a Contour ThreadLift™ generally range from $2,000 to $5,000 per region. The regions that can be treated include the brows, midface and cheeks, and jowls and neck area.

What should I expect immediately after surgery?

This is typically a short procedure, about one hour, so you will generally feel good and have normal energy the day after surgery. Some fatigue may persist for two to three days due to the normal effects of the anesthesia and surgical procedure. Your energy level will depend on the extent of your procedure and your response to medications. You may return to work as soon as you feel and look the way you want, usually a few days after surgery.

You may have soft wrinkles and folds in the skin along the path of the threads. Depending upon the laxity of your skin and the amount of lift you want, the wrinkles may be noticeable, and occasionally may be prominent. The irregularities will smooth out over a period of a few days to a few weeks.

Juvedérm®

What is Juvedérm® and how does it work?

Juvedérm® is a modified form of Hyaluronic Acid, a naturally occurring substance found in the skin. It is a natural sugar found in all living cells and throughout your body that attracts and binds water, hydrating your skin. Over recent years, hyaluronic acid (HA) has emerged as the miracle compound for filling in wrinkles. It is used as a cosmetic dermal filler that is injected by your doctor just where its needed most to smooth out lines and wrinkles and return a youthful look to your face. Juvedérm® gives volume to the skin, lubricates the joints, and gives the eyes their shape. In the skin, HA fills the space between collagen and elastin fibers--replenishing the natural support layers lost with aging, while delivering essential nutrients. Over time, HA is gradually reabsorbed in the body.

How long will Juvedérm® last? Juvedérm® will last approximately 6 – 9 months depending on factors such as age, skin type, lifestyle, and muscle activity.

How is Juvedérm® administered? Local anesthetic may be applied pre-treatment. During the treatment, the gel is injected into the skin in tiny amounts with a very thin needle.

What areas get treated with Juvederm®?

  • Fill in folds between nose and mouth
  • Smooth out lines above and around the lips

Each product is designed for different purposes. Your trained injector will choose the product that matches the tissue structure at various levels of skin depths and your objectives:

Juvedérm® 18 : correction of fine wrinkles, such as laughter lines and the smoker lines or peri-oral wrinkles.

Juvedérm® 24 or 24HV : for medium depth wrinkles correction, such as nasolabial folds, lip augmentation, forehead wrinkles, glabellar lines, obvious mild to moderate nasal furrows, and cheek wrinkles.

Juvedérm® 30 or 30HV: is denser and the most cross linked version, for folds filling, cheeks volume filling, lips volume filling, and very deep nasolabial, naso-genian folds.

What do I need to do before the procedure?

Patients should arrive for the treatment without their makeup. It is also recommended that if you are taking any anti-inflammatories, or aspirin, that you stop doing so three days to one week before the scheduled injections.

Can I have the treatment and go back to work?

Yes. Some patients may experience some redness and swelling which can be minimized with cover-up makeup.

The area may also be sensitive to the touch and may also be slightly bruised. All of these reactions should subside within 72 hours.

Excessive facial expression should be avoided in the hours following this procedure. Sunscreen should be worn in the weeks following the injection and excessive heat should be avoided (for example: saunas, hot tubs tanning beds).

The injection area should be treated gently: do not massage or rub. Patients can continue their regular skin care regimen and apply makeup the day after the injection. Avoid using any products containing alcohol.

Is the procedure painful?

There is some discomfort. The product is injected into the skin with a very fine needle and patients are treated with a topical aesthetic to numb the area to be injected.

Can something go wrong?

The dermal fillers that demonstrate consistent safety for the last 20 years are the non-permanent dermal fillers such as Juvedérm®. There are some risks that are involved whenever a patients is exposed to any foreign product, but the risks associated with the selected group of dermal fillers that we have discussed is minimal. At the time of your consultation, your clinician will discuss these risks with you.

Are there any side effects?

Redness, edema, and pain at the injection site may develop after treatment and generally disappear spontaneously within 72 hours.

Occasional cases of induration in the form of nodules, sometimes accompanied by redness, may occur a few days to a few weeks after the injection and have been described after hyaluronic acid injections.

Juvedérm® is now available in Canada and we are proud to offer it to our patients. If you are interested in learning more about Juvéderm®, please contact Hummingbird Medical, Cosmetic and Aesthetic Institute today.

Intense Pulsed Light /Laser Hair Removal

To be hair free for the long run, Intense Pulsed Light now plays a central role in hair removal with superb results.

What are the benefits of Laser Hair Removal?

  • safe
  • effective
  • no downtime
  • no need to shave, wax, or pluck

How does it work?

Laser hair removal works by directing the laser light to a group of hair follicles, using enough power to disable or destroy the root without harming the surrounding skin. This process is called selective photothermolysis. It is selective because it targets only the hair and not the skin. Photo means light and thermolysis means destroying with heat. The surrounding skin is usually cooled.

Who are the best candidates for laser hair removal?

Because the laser's light energy is absorbed by the pigment melanin, in the skin, people with greater contrast respond best. So individuals with dark hair and light colored skin get maximum results. That's why you should avoid tanning before and after the treatment for best results. However new laser technology has made it possible for other people (including dark complexions) to get significant results.

What should I expect?

The result: A 50 to 80 percent (or better) reduction in unwanted hair.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

Hair is natural to your body and it grows in stages. At any given time, not all hairs are growing. Lasers are most effective at targeting growing hairs. In practice, no laser destroys all of the hair follicles. Some follicles are destroyed, while others are miniaturized into fine hairs, and others are shocked into prolonged dormancy. Multiple treatment are needed for best results and the best interval for retreatment depends on the hair cycle growth patterns in that area of the body. It is possible that with a sufficient number of treatments, true "permanent hair removal" can ultimately be achieved, but not for every single hair present in a given area. Be advised that the FDA cleared these lasers for "permanent hair reduction," and not "permanent hair removal," which is advertised by many clinics.

What areas can be treated?

Laser hair removal is good for both facial hair removal and for body hair removal. Specific body sites include the upper lip, underarms, legs, back, shoulders, chin, cheeks, and other facial areas for women.

Laser hair removal can be used almost anywhere that's covered with unwanted hair. Perhaps the most commonly treated areas are facial hair in women. This may be because facial hair is so obvious and so troublesome for those who have it. It can also take a lot of time, on a very frequent basis, to get rid of facial hair by plucking. The chin and the upper lip are the most commonly treated.

Does Laser Hair Removal Hurt?

Not really. As compared to the pain from waxing or electrolysis most patients say their laser treatment was relatively pain-free. Many patients describe the treatment as tingling or a slight snapping sensation. Usually, the majority of patients can easily tolerate this sensation without any type of anesthetics. However you may elect to use a topical numbing cream before your procedure.

If you do feel any discomfort it's only while the area is being treated. Then after the procedure the area treated may become pink or red (like a mild sunburn) for a day or so. Also after leaving the office you will not need any bandages because there is no damage to your skin.

How many treatments will I need?

The laser can only disable actively-growing hairs during your treatment. And because hair growth occurs in cycles, only a certain amount of hair follicles are growing at any one time. The number of treatments you may require for optimal long-term benefits depends on the area you wish to have treated, the hair density and your hair's growth cycle. Your hair grows in cycles and many factors influence its growth. Age, ethnicity, weight, hormones, diet, medication, and metabolism all play a part in your hair's location, thickness and resilience. The laser energy is only effective on hairs which are in their active growth phase. Many hair follicles are in their resting stage at any one particular time. That means several visits will be necessary (but nowhere close to number needed for electrolysis) to catch the hairs that were in the resting stage before.

As a general rule, several treatments will be required. However, most times you can expect to see a 50 percent reduction in hair growth after just one treatment. Then after determining your individual characteristics we can develop a treatment schedule that's best for you.

How far apart in time should laser hair removal treatments be given?

Because the hair removal laser is only effective on actively growing hair follicles, treatments should be spaced apart so that the hair follicles in the area have time to begin growing again.

If the treatment is given too soon, that particular treatment episode will not be effective. The answer is dependent upon several factors. But, for the bulk of cases, we suggest about two months between treatments.

What complications and risks are possible?

Lasers have been carefully tested for their safety. Occasionally blisters can develop and, very rarely, scarring or infection. Also there is a possibility of hypo or hyperpigmentation (if this does occur most changes in skin color will fade away over time). But these same effects can also occur with electrolysis and even shaving or waxing.

What do I need to do before my laser hair removal treatment?

Tanning should be avoided. Avoid sun exposure for 3 weeks. Also you should leave slight stubble for laser hair removal to be effective. Shave 24 hours before treatment. Also avoid waxing, tweezing, or bleaching those areas several weeks before laser treatment.

What can the IPL be used for besides hair removal?

IPL stimulates new collagen to form in the skin thereby reducing fine lines, minimizing pore size and acne scars, and increasing skin elasticity. Intense pulsed light also diminishes flushing or redness of the face associated with Rosacea, reduces brown spots, erases broken capillaries, and smoothes roughly textured skin. After IPL therapy, it is especially important to wear sunscreen and a hat to avoid sun exposure and prevent discoloration or recurrence of sun damage, brown spots, and lines.

Levulan

What is Levulan Photodynamic Therapy?

2 IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is combined with a topical medication called Levulan in a procedure known as Levulan Photodynamic Therapy (PDT). Photodynamic therapy for acne, precancerous sun spots, and other uses, involves the application of Levulan (5-aminolevulinic acid), a medication that increases the skin's sensitivity to light.

The Levulan is then activated with IPL which contains many wavelengths of light including 'blue light'. Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is also known as 'ALA/PDT treatment'. Sun damage, fine lines, and blotchy pigmentation are also improved due to the positive effects of this treatment. ALA/PDT treatment also has the unique ability to minimize pores and reduce oil glands, effectively treating stubborn acne, rosacea, and improving the appearance of some acne scars.

What is Levulan?

Levulan (5-Amino Levulinic Acid) is a medication that is applied to the skin. This medication makes the skin more sensitive to sunlight and the IPL treatments.

What is IPL?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), also known as photofacial, fotofacial, and photo rejuvenation, is a state-of-the-art system and the latest technique in photofacial therapy. The IPL system delivers high intensity, smooth and powerful pulses of light (not lasers) that greatly enhances the results of your skin rejuvenation. For skin therapy, IPL stimulates new collagen growth resulting in smoother, more even, healthier skin. IPL contains many wavelengths of light energy including 'blue light'.

What is Blue Light?

Blue light is an alternative light source that can be used instead of or with IPL to activate the Levulan (see BLU-U®).

Can Levulan Photodynamic therapy be used to treat acne?

Yes! This results in significant improvement in moderate to severe cystic acne. Acne is a common, chronic skin condition caused by inflammation of oil-producing sebaceous glands. Acne usually begins between the ages of ten and thirteen and persists for five to ten years.

While hormonal acne typically starts between the ages of 20-25, it can strike teenagers as well. Hormonal acne is sometimes persistent in women in their 30s. While not life threatening, acne can leave life-long emotional and physical scars - a reminder of the embarrassment and self-consciousness that came with the pimples. No one wants to get zits. Approximately 90 percent of all adolescents and 25 percent of all adults experience acne at some point in their lives. It's one of the most extensive medical conditions in the world, and is responsible for about 30 percent of all visits to the dermatologists.

IPL Levulan Photodynamic acne treatment involves three mechanisms of action against acne. Levulan treatment inactivates the bacteria that trigger acne, exfoliates the skin to unclog pores, and shuts down the oil glands (sebaceous glands) in the skin. This can produce long-lasting improvement. Levulan acne therapy can even work in patients who have failed Accutane. Levulan is a very safe alternative to Accutane treatment. Results with Levulan PDT are especially impressive when compared with conventional treatments, such as topical medicines and oral antibiotics.

Can Levulan Photodynamic Therapy be used to treat freckles and skin pigmentation?

Yes. They might have been cute when you were younger, but those freckles you have now probably aren't as attractive as they once were. Even more, they are actually signs of sun-damaged skin. All those years at the beach add up, even if you can't see the damage it has caused.

Many people believe that if they apply a bit of sunscreen and they don't peel, they're not at risk for sun damage or skin cancer. However, the VISIA™ UV analysis (see VISIA™) proves this theory wrong.

The skin's pigment, called melanin, only absorbs certain UV light waves. If we filter out the waves that are not absorbed, we can see the melanin. The VISIA™ is able to show the dark blotchy spots called hyperpigmentation, which indicates UV damaged skin. You'd be surprised how much damage even children and young people have. PDT is a safe and efficient way to reduce and improve freckling.

Can Levulan Photodynamic Therapy be used for skin rejuvenation and improvement of sun damage?

Yes. Levulan Photodynamic Therapy using intense pulsed light (IPL) is now the gold standard for non-surgical skin rejuvenation. This procedure results in significant improvement in precancerous conditions such as actinic keratoses, sun damaged skin, and potentially superficial skin cancers. Additionally it improves wrinkles, pore size, skin texture, pigmentation, rosacea, sebaceous hyperplasia (oil gland enlargement), and potentially prevents the development of skin cancer. Levulan is revolutionizing how we perform skin rejuvenation and how we treat sun-damaged skin.

What else can Levulan Photodynamic Therapy be used for?

  • Removing precancerous skin lesions
  • Preventing skin cancer
  • Improving wrinkles
  • Improving pores
  • Improving skin texture
  • Improving pigmentation
  • Treating moderate to severe cystic acne
  • Treating sebaceous hyperplasia

What is the procedure for Levulan Photodynamic therapy?

  • An IPL Photodynamic Therapy technician will apply the medicine, which is a clear solution, to freshly cleansed skin. After a period of one to two hours, the area is illuminated with an appropriate light source. This hour application time is termed the "incubation" period. Short incubation times retain efficacy but diminish discomfort and side effects.
  • The therapy is suitable to treat all areas of the body, including the back, chest and face.
  • After the incubation period the Levulan will be activated with IPL (Intense Pulsed Light).
  • You will be placed under the Blue Light for approx. 8-15 minutes.
  • You will be given special goggles to wear to protect your eyes during the treatment.
  • During the treatment you may feel stinging, tingling, prickling, or burning of the lesions, but this should go away after the treatment.
  • After treatment with the IPL and BLU-U®, the solution will be washed off the skin using soap and water following the light activation.

Who should not have PDT (Levulan Photodynamic Therapy) treatments?

You should not be treated if you have:

  • Skin sensitivity to blue light
  • Porphyria (a disorder of the metabolism that can lead to sensitivity to light)
  • Allergies to chemicals called porphyrins

Is the cost of Levulan PDT covered by drug insurance?

Sometimes. We can print any invoices or letters you may need to submit to your benefit coverage.

What should I expect after my procedure?

You should stay out of the sun and bright light as much as possible for the next 48 hours because the treated lesions are sensitive to light. Going into bright light or sunlight runs the risk of getting redness, stinging, burning sensation in the skin, swelling or even a severe burn. After a normal treatment the skin will become red and swollen in the following three to seven days. Some crusting may be noted and is normal. There should be some discomfort, but no significant pain. After one week, there might be some residual redness that will subside after a few days and can be covered with make up. You can return to normal activities immediately after treatment, as long as you avoid bright light and sunlight for 48 hours. Patients should protect treated lesions from the sun by wearing a wide-brimmed hat or similar head covering of light-opaque material. Sunscreens will NOT protect against photosensitivity reactions caused by visible light.

How much improvement can I expect?

Patients with severe sun damaged skin manifested by actinic keratosis, texture, and tone changes including mottled pigmentation and skin laxity may see excellent results. You may also see improvements of large pores and pitted acne scars. Active acne can improve dramatically.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments is best determined in a personal consultation and ongoing session results but on average a series of three treatments, two to four weeks apart may be needed.

Some patients may find that one treatment is enough to see a good result and may then only need to get periodic treatments.

Mesotherapy/ Lipodissolve™

Most of us develop lumps and bumps of unsightly fat and/or cellulite in our lives. Now there's a solution. Lipodissolve™/Mesotherapy specifically target localized fat and cellulite deposits. The treatment slowly dissolves the deposits with injections of fat-dissolving substances. The body naturally eliminates the residue after a session over the following three to four weeks.

What is the difference between Lipodissolve™ and Mesotherapy?

Lipodissolve™ is an innovative application of mesotherapy that specifically targets localized fat and cellulite deposits. The treatment slowly dissolves the deposits with injections of fat-dissolving substances. The body naturally eliminates the residue after a Lipodissolve™ session over the following three to four weeks. Side effects can include mild swelling, bruising, discomfort, or itching.

Mesotherapy is the practice of using microinjections of conventional or homeopathic medication and/or vitamins into the "mesoderm," or middle layer of skin, to deliver healing or corrective treatment to a specific area of the body.

What is Mesotherapy?

Mesotherapy can be used to improve the appearance of cellulite, fat reduction, wrinkles, and sagging skin. Spot reduction and contouring areas of fat around locations such as love handles, thighs, knees, double chins, eye fat pads, and saddlebags can be achieved. Mesotherapy medications injected into your skin promote the production of collagen and elastin, which will result in the improvement of the skin's appearance by reducing the proliferation of wrinkles.

What are the benefits of Mesotherapy?

  • Side effects and contraindications associated with other treatments and medications are minimal.
  • Tightening and toning of the area treated occurs with the return of skin elasticity created by the enhanced production of collagen and elastin.
  • Treatments will slow down and reverse the progression of wrinkling and maintain a more youthful and invigorated look.
  • You can return to normal activities immediately following your treatment.
  • There is no need for a general anesthetic
  • Cost-effective

How does it work?

Lipo/Meso treatments consist of small injections of a natural soy bean substance and enzymes that is highly effective for dissolving the small, stubborn fat deposits that resist diet and exercise. The treatments consist of a series of small injections into the target areas of localized fat.

What should I expect?

Lipo/Meso is an excellent method for smoothing the skin and eliminating fat deposits, within a clinical setting. You can obtain results in usually three to eight treatments. It is a quick office procedure and any side effects such as temporary bruising, itching and soreness are minimal and temporary. Most patients lose one to three inches around their waistline in one to three treatments.

Is this a new procedure?

Over the past 10 years, doctors in South America, South Africa, and Europe have successfully used mesotherapy procedures on hundreds of thousands of patients.

What areas respond best?

The areas that respond best to Meso treatment -- in those who are not excessively overweight -- are certain stubborn fat deposits that resist further reduction after diet and exercise. These include double chins, the abdomen, love handles, backs of arms, thigh saddlebags, knees, and wings (the area on the back, just beside the armpits). Mesotherapy has also been shown to improve and smooth out the skin.

Is the fat removal permanent?

Phosphatidylcholine will dissolve the fat cell. The fat is eliminated from the body via urination. However, with weight gain new fat can reappear. A balanced diet along with regular exercise is recommended.

Who is Mesotherapy meant for?

It is suitable for men and women who are not excessively overweight, but instead have certain problem areas with stubborn fat that can no longer be reduced by diet and exercise.

The abdomen, arms, thighs, knees, saddlebags, wings (the area on the back, just beside the armpits), and the lower eyelids can be treated with Mesotherapy. It is also the answer to people who have long wanted to undergo liposuction but are too scared to go under the knife; however, for much bigger areas, liposuction is still best. Mesotherapy is perfect for the person who wants to lose that last five pounds on the thighs, stomach, or knees. The treatment has become popular among celebrities.

Is phosphatidylcholine safe?
'Phosphatidylcholine' is made from a natural enzyme. However, in rare instances, side effects may occur. These side effects may include local pain, temporary bruising, itching, and soreness for one to two days. Clinics administrating 'Phosphatidylcholine' are extremely pleased with the results and its safety.

Long term side effects are unknown at this point. Mesotherapy injections should be used under doctor's supervisions. Persons who are diabetic, pregnant, highly obese, on medication, suffering a diagnosed illness, or allergic to the product should not have Mesotherapy injections.

Is it painful?

No. The specialized needle is extremely fine and the skin (fat) is often pinched between the doctor's fingers during the injection. There may be a slight burning sensation, which will quickly go away. If you are very sensitive we can pre-treat the area with topical anesthetic cream, which makes the treatment virtually painless.

What kind of bruising can the average patient expect?

Typically, after your first mesotherapy session you can expect dime-sized bruises at 5-10 injection sites. These typically resolve in five to seven days if you don't use any Arnica. With subsequent sessions the bruising becomes less and less as your body gets used to the therapy. Most patients have two to four small bruises after each session.

We advise patients to apply Arnica several times a day before and after the mesotherapy. This not only reduces the amount of bruising that occurs in the first place, it also makes bruises resolve twice as fast. The worst bruising I have ever seen occurs in patients who take daily doses of aspirin, ibuprofen, high dose vitamin E or garlic supplements or patients who have bruised easily all their lives.

Many herbal supplements have anticoagulant properties. These patients can expect bruising at about 15-40 percent of the injection sites.

Pixel Erbium Laser Treatments

Now you can get a laser peel, which gives the best results available, without the pain or down time associated with lasers in the past. The new Pixel Laser allows you to go right back to work the same day.

What is the Pixel Laser?

The Pixel Laser is a fractional ablative laser that represents the best of both worlds for skin resurfacing: it combines the proven effectiveness of an ablative approach with the patient comfort level and convenience of a non-ablative approach. The Pixel Laser can be used on the face, neck, chest, arms and hands – a much wider scope than traditional ablative technologies. Designed to treat aged and photo-damaged skin, the Pixel improves the quality and texture of the dermis while it stimulates collagen regeneration.

Recommended applications include:

  • Skin resurfacing
  • Laser peeling
  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Acne Scars

Skin resurfacing with the Pixel is a gradual process that happens over several treatments, usually one treatment every 3 weeks. The risk of infection is reduced significantly from previous conventional treatment methods.

How does the Pixel work?

A preprogrammed laser beam passes through the patented Pixel micro optics lens and penetrates the skin. It creates an ablative and thermal effect at the pixel area – a micro-injury – without disturbing the surrounding tissue. Those micro-injured areas start the process of healing as collagen remodels, skin tightens and the skin texture improves.

What Happens After the Treatment?

The patient will experience a mild sunburn sensation for about an hour and then virtually no discomfort. The skin will have a pinkish tone for five to seven days. This is a normal sign that skin is healing deeply. Swelling is mild and generally resolves in two to three days. The patient may apply make-up or shave soon after treatment. Typically patients can return to work the following day. New epidermal skin develops immediately, within 24 hours. This process of skin repair involves various stages. Your skin will have a bronze appearance that lasts anywhere from three to fourteen days, depending on the treatment level.

During treatment:

The treatment can take up to three hours. Each time treatment is delivered, there is an immediate cool sensation followed by a brief hot sensation, followed again by a cool sensation. At our clinic we offer additional measures to increase your comfort.

After treatment:

  • Each person is unique and results are variable. We recommend patients rest the day of the procedure. Some people choose to go back to work on the following day. A friend or family member must drive and accompany you into your home.
  • Don't make any plans or engagements for the rest of the day you will feel sedated and will probably just go home to bed.
  • There will be minimal if any skin reaction, your skin will look normal after the treatment; occasionally there will be minimal redness or minimal swelling.
  • The following day you may care for your skin as usual (washing, cleansing, toners, make-up etc.).
  • Some minor swelling and tenderness may persist for 1 week.

When will I see results?

Recently published studies conducted by Thermage® show that measurable tightening improvements appear gradually over two weeks to six months after a single treatment session however, many patients report seeing an earlier response.

How many treatments will I need?

A single treatment has produced good results in a significant number of patients. However, your doctor will assess the number and frequency of treatments required to achieve optimal results for your skin.

How long will the effects of the Thermage® procedure last?

The Thermage® procedure causes an immediate tightening of the collagen structure with additional tightening over time. Unpublished reports by experienced physicians indicate that results may last two years or longer based on the patient's natural aging process.

How long before I can return to my normal activities?

Most people return to their regular activities immediately following the Thermage® procedure. Some people experience mild redness (like a sunburn) but it usually disappears quickly.

There is no special care needed after treatment, but sunscreen is recommended as a part of good skin care.

Is Thermage® safe?

The Thermage procedure has an excellent safety record. With over 190,000 estimated worldwide patient treatments to date the reported incidence of side effects is less than 0.4%.

The most frequently reported incidents are classified as swelling, redness, bumps, and blisters on or around the treated area. These side effects have disappeared in a few days or weeks.

Consult with your physician regarding this and any other questions you may have on the safety record of the Thermage® procedure.

What is infrared energy? Is it dangerous?

The sun emits both UV and infrared rays. UV rays activate the melanin and cause you to tan, while invisible infrared rays provide the warmth. Infrared energy (or radiant heat) heats objects directly through a process of conversion without having to heat the air in between.

Infrared therapy is not only completely safe and natural, but all living things require it for optimum health. Infrared energy penetrates both skin and muscle tissue, creating resonance, which provides a multitude of health benefits. Also, hours of infrared light exposure will never burn your skin.

What is the difference between an infrared and a steam sauna?

Steam saunas rely on indirect means of heat. That’s why individuals with respiratory or cardiovascular difficulties often find the damp air suffocating and leave a steam sauna before it can provide any therapeutic effect.

The infrared sauna, on the other hand, produces direct radiant heat through conversion—it does not have to heat the air around you. Its penetrative properties warm you much more efficiently and to a greater depth than a traditional sauna that heats you and the air around you much more superficially.

In addition to the health benefits, the infrared sauna has been known to induce 2-3 times the sweat volume of the traditional hot air sauna, while operating at a significantly cooler air temperature range. The lower heat range is far safer and more comfortable for those with cardiovascular or respiratory problems.

When I sweat, do I just lose water and not weight?

You lose much more than water. Producing one gram of sweat consumes 0.586 kcal. As your body becomes more heat conditioned, you can sweat more profusely and burn a greater number of calories. Make sure you drink lots of water after the sauna. And don’t worry, the water you consume will never replace the hundreds of calories your body has expended by sweating.
